If you are an HR team member and you hear your leaders making this statement, don’t give in to this negotiation technique. Employees don’t join organisations just for the salary. The organisation’s culture is driven by its leaders. There are big retail outlets that will make you feel unwelcome. There are staff of these small sweet stalls, who will manage to sell stuff to your entire family when all that you want to buy is a sandwich to satiate your growling stomach. This is a perfect example of a high-performance culture.

If leaders are not made accountable for recruiting and handholding their team members, you will continue to hear this peanut & monkey story, no matter how much salary you pay. Leaders are torchbearers of organisational culture and that includes building a performance culture. Do not settle with excuses from your leaders, motivate them to build the right organisational culture and performance.
